The mechanism behind the 8th Wonder of the World.
There are infinite ways that you can use leverage to increase your productivity without having to increase your own biological energy input. For example, while digging a hole, a spade gives leverage in relation to bare hands. In other words, leverage is any advantage that increases your desired effect relative to your energy expended. Leverage is the efficiency multiplier of any effort.
Human power is the ability to impart effort per unit of time. The ability to use that power to greater effect through the use of tools and knowledge is Intelligence Leverage.
In any two-way relationship, each party's perceived ability or desire to benefit or harm the other creates Influence Leverage.
Here’s a simple list of things that exhibit leverage.
Scarcity
The more valuable something is, the more money you can make from controlling it. Scarcity is heavily affected by both Influence and Intelligence.
Intrinsic value hierarchy:
- Beliefs - the ability to create people's beliefs (about your product/service)
- Goals - the ability to create people's goals (in relation to your product / service)
- Incentives - the ability to make people do something in relation to your product/service
- Skills - the ability to teach or provide a product or service
- Tools - Things that have the ability to solve a problem
- Materials - Things that are used to create tools
Speed/time
Time is the singularity most valuable thing we have. Any method of saving it adds leverage.
Understanding of Your Audience
The better you understand your audience, the better you can solve their problems, reach them, influence them, etc.
Distinctiveness
Being distinctive makes you more memorable, which gives you a higher influence.
Audience Concentration
Increases demand. The more geographically or socially concentrated the audience, the less time it takes to reach them, and the faster your message is shared between them.
Specific Knowledge & Skills
The more specialised and difficult to learn your skills are, the Intelligence they embody, and the more expensive your labour becomes.
Audience Size
The bigger your audience or following, the bigger your Influence.
Focus
By focusing more energy on a smaller area, you are able to compound your Intelligence and Influence faster.
Media
Anything that has zero cost of distribution has the potential for immense Influence leverage. Movies, Podcasts, videos, blogs, articles.
Responsibility
The weight of responsibility you are entrusted with has a proportionate increase in Influence.
Reputation
The better your track record of success, the easier it is to persuade or influence opportunities to come your way.
Talent density
Hiring high calibre people will increase the overall Intelligence and Influence leverage of your organisation.
Automation
Using Intelligence leverage to set up machines that apply synthetic energy to vastly increase their output.
Delegation & Specialisation
Letting individuals apply greater focus within their areas of greatest ability.
Communication Efficiency
Communication is extremely time-consuming, we can eliminate the need for it through strong mutual understanding and clear messaging.
Capital
The more capital you have, the more you can pay for the Influence and Intelligence of others.
Conviction & Duty
Having a worthy reason for what you want and sharing it with pride increases your influence with those who share the same values.
Beliefs & Community
The ability to influence others to increase their beliefs of what they can achieve.
Harmful Substitute Elimination
Intelligently removing distractions can force you to do what is in your own best interests.
Helpful Substitute Placement
Intelligently adding obstacles can force you to do what is in your own best interests.
Relative Popularity & Competition
If a field is under-appreciated or overlooked by competitors, you have an advantage in accumulating intelligence and influence within it.
Quality Leverage
Tools & items that have much more embodied Intelligence built into their form factors.
